Greetings from Mlada Boleslav! As you can see your help this summer really paid off. I have been teaching conversational English at Gymnázium Dr. Josera Pekare since September 1.
This has been excellent training, but I really do prefer training adults, and also prefer a tutoring type situation.
The other English teachers in the school have more or less adopted me, and all of them have helped me in getting established in Mladá Boleslav from going with me to the Foreign Police, to getting a bank account opened, and even going with me to the doctor for my primary visit.
One of my student's father is a Czech Senator, so on Sv. Václav, a group of students and teacher went to Prague to see the sights, with a special tour of the Czech Senate.
I also spent on memorable Saturday at Sobotka to see Humbrecht castle/hunting lodge.
Two weeks ago, several of the teachers, and I, went to the 200th anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Austerlitz in Slavkov. We spent a few hours in Brno on our way back to Mladá Boleslav. What happy memories that brought back to me.
Hope everything is going well for all of you. Just wanted to say, "Hi", and thank you again for making all of this possible for me. If it were not for your school, I would never have come to the Czech Republic. I really feel so comfortable here. I know that I shall miss it when I return to the States, but I also know that I really belong back in the USA.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Attending the Boland School's TEFL Diploma Course was my first time travelling overseas. I decided to take the course overseas vs. in the United States in order to acclimate myself to the culture of another country before I decided to take a teaching position in a place I had never been to before. I made the right decision.
The accomodations that the school provides are modern and clean. I found them to feel very safe (as a timid first time traveller to China). The staff at the accomodations are very friendly. I enjoyed getting to know the office staff and the people who run the store a bit. Suzhou itself is a wonderful city. It is modern, so there are many ammenities available. At the same time it has a wealth of Chinese tradition, shown by the architecture and gardens around the city.
There are many different kinds of restaurants around the city. I had to try the Pizza Hut and the Papa John's Pizza. They came really close to pizza at home. (The course brought back college cravings for pizza!)
I feel that the teaching practice that I got and the grammar issues that were ironed out were the most beneficial aspects of the course for me. It is amazing how a person can speak English for their entire life, but when asked can not explain why they say what they say.The staff at the Boland School is very helpful. Honestly, it is a very intensive course. It was stressful at times but the staff was always encouraging. I felt a tremendous amount of relief and accomplishment when I finished my final exams. Tim was very helpful in finding me a teaching position that met my needs. I feel more prepared to teach English now upon completing the course. I definitely recommend the Boland School's Program.

Hello, everybody! Hope you are all well! I am!
Just want to say "Hi" and thanks again for the wonderful experience.
One of the most serious learning experiences of my young life and I have had many.
You'all are right on the money and, as I get many questions about
my trip to China and my preparations for work I find myself giving
your web-site to many people, mostly young college students, and a
few older ones.
Take care.

Initial contact, application procedure, scheduling, airport pick-up,
accommodation- all excellent. It's been a good trip to China, and it's
definitely been worthwhile. In the classes, I liked how every topic
was taught individually. The materials were good, and also were good
references when there was something I didn't really understand.

Thanks so much for your help along the way and having such a thorough,
reliable program where I was able to learn so much.

I thought the course was wonderful, albeit intense. But it was what I seemed to need at the time!
I am planning to write up a little more feedback, but unfortunately I have returned to huge amounts of work, so that feedback will have to wait a little while... .
Thanks for a great time in Brno...I was extremely impressed with how well you run your school!

I thank you for all of your help and the great experience of coming to know a language that I though I already knew.
I have done a bit of research for positions on my own and have come up against a wall in finding much on the web concerning Ukraine, my first choice of location being Odessa. I was beginning to feel a bit frustrated and defeated in finding any prospects in Ukraine. They are not the most widely publicized market on the web. It may seem crazy to want to go there, but it is a direct link to learning a lot about my family that is still there. I appreciate the jobs site Ukraine leads and personal assistance very much, it is a priceless hand in helping me in my new direction. Thank you again - I send you my best.

The topics were all well-covered, and the staff was professional,
and always willing to help.
Too bad we didn't all get to teach a really advanced level class in
addition to the beginners and intermediates-it would have been useful
for comparison.
The schedules were great -they kept me on track with homework, and
preparation. I also really appreciated the teaching rehearsals. They
were invaluable! Nice job to all!

Thanks for the great course and all the preparation for the China
job market. I love it here and everything is going very well. I am
very happy and can not ask for a better place. My house is fine and
my work even better-the teachers and students are very nice and the
people in other schools are also very nice. Thanks again for everything
and let the good times be with you and your school.

Things have been brilliant! The Internship was brilliant, I couldn't
have felt more welcome at the primary school in Suzhou. The Career
Day school visits and all the Job Presentations with the various
schools were really helpful. There's a lot that needs doing back home
now, but I am looking forward to returning to China soon. Thank you, Chris C.

Teaching English abroad - insights from a couple of Boland graduates one to two years after completing the course.
|
I am living in southern Thailand and doing some part-time English
teaching. I teach PhD and bachelor degree students, preferring more
advanced students of English. I never worked in the Czech Republic.
One of my reasons for doing the course in Brno was because I wanted
to get to a wedding in Germany immediately after the course finished
and it was a convenient location. I also happened to like the Czech
Republic and I was impressed with what I saw of Boland. Their web
site was informative and Katie Boland answered all of my many questions
promptly and efficiently. That told me a lot about how they operated
as an organisation. more »
I was the exception on my TEFL course. Everyone else wanted to find
work straight away but it was just something I wanted to keep in my
back pocket, so to speak, in case I needed it later. I was in no
hurry to find work.
As it turns out, I did need those skills later. There aren't too many work options in Thailand for foreigners apart from English teaching and the Boland course prepared me well. The course wasn't easy (and I would assume that is still the case) but it prepares you well for teaching. Katie Boland, who owns the school, understands TEFL as well as anyone around and runs a tight ship with regard to teacher training.
Having worked under pressure at IBM for many years I was surprised indeed at how much the course pushed me. Passing the course is not guaranteed and some people just walk away with a certificate of attendance rather than a pass. However, nothing worthwhile in life comes easy, as the old proverb says. The course will push you but once you finish you will feel confident about walking into any almost teaching situation. That's quite amazing actually, considering the course only runs for four weeks.
I didn't teach until almost two years after my course but it all came back to me fairly quickly. Of course, I didn't remember all the detail I had learnt but I knew where to go to find it and I had a much better overall appreciation of what teaching English involved.
The ability to speak English does not give someone the ability to teach it. Not only do people struggle trying to teach when they haven't been taught themselves but they cheat their students, many of whom pay good money and have a real desire to learn. I have followed a few very uneducated 'teachers' and have been appalled at what I have seen.
At one place I taught last year I was forever correcting students with the use of the article (the Thai language has no concept of article so Thais find its usage difficult when learning English). When I eventually saw their previous 'teacher' in action I was not surprised. Not one correction did he make in an entire teaching period as he taught them how to speak while drinking in a working man's pub in England.
I'm sorry if this sounds snobbish but I actually think that people setting themselves up as teachers should realise the responsibility they are taking on. Teachers in Thailand are given an enormous amount of respect without having to earn any of it and they owe it to their students to give of their best. Some though appear to have no conscience. I know we all have our own reasons for wanting to teach English abroad but the bottom line is that students depend on us and they should be treated with respect.
As for Boland, I have no complaints about their teach-the-teacher methodologies, just praise. The course was tough but had it been easy I would not have felt as well prepared for teaching as I did after I completed it.
With TEFL courses being run all over the world my one suggestion would be to choose a school in the country you would like to teach in immediately after (unless you are like me and do not desire to work immediately after your course). The schools will have lists of local contacts to make job finding easier.
I have no hesitation recommending Boland.
Good luck,
Phil Lattimore

Probably the main reason I liked Boland is that it is small - I have never heard of them having more than about eight students at a time - you get individual attention when needed. That contrasts greatly with at least some schools in Prague. (One acquaintance told me that his class had 53 students!) more »
Another reason that I wanted Boland was that it welcomes North Americans, too, and not just British. When I was first looking into TEFL training some of the British schools were less than enthusiastic about even giving me info. One or two went so far as to tell me that I would have difficulty finding work in Europe due to my not being from an E. U. country! * Technically this is true, but the need is such that at least in central and eastern European countries they could care less about where you are from as long as you are a native speaker. (Also, I know two Americans presently working in Germany.)
*Note from Boland administration: the Boland School provides working visa sponsorship and job placement for EU and non-EU citizens who are planning to move directly from the course into teaching jobs in the Czech Republic.
And finally I chose Brno because it is small - about the size of Milwaukee - and even with the little time you have away from the TEFL classes you can get to know and enjoy it to some degree.
If you are serious about ESL teaching then I will recommend Boland - not because I know it is the best, but because I know it is very good and it is the only one with which I have personal experience. What I do know about some other schools - especially some in Prague - is that they are paper mills which take your money and hand you a certificate after a month. Keep in mind that I am not all that well acquainted with other schools and there must be some very good ones out there - I just don't know which ones they are.
Also- if you like conversation and meeting people, you can get all of it you want teaching here! Liking people and being a conversationalist are what will make you successful.
